Scheduled downtime, if existent, will be announced here. For queries and concerns, join our #4chon IRC channel on the DatNode IRC Network: WebIRC. You can help out by donating for better uptime.
4chon will be down for 15-25 minutes for a hardware upgrade on Friday, 20th of January @ 2 PM CET.
Another large DDoS attack. Stay tuned.
Update: Again managed to reroute traffic around the DDoS attack. 4chon should be back up for most.
Continued DDoS attack. Again, managed to get around it for now.
Currently experiencing a DDoS attack from people trying to start drama (not 4chon.org—don't do anything stupid).
Update: We've managed to reroute traffic around the affected addresses. Flush your DNS cache. If you're not sure how, try:
Unexplained server crash. Still investigating.
Firewall derp, sorry. Will return ASAP.
Hard drive has suddenly gone into "read-only" mode. Investigating and trying to fix. Everything is backed up safely.
Update: We need to move out of Canada, but we're having a little trouble. We require your support: help out by donating.
Update (again): We will be moving to the Netherlands, instead of the United States, momentarily. Stay calm.
Last update: We're back.
Went down unexpectedly. We're working on it.
Update: Back. No idea what happened. Scheduled maintenance on the network that caused momentary loss of connection. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Networking issues. Will be back ASAP (very soon).
Update: It's back.
We got a new server a few hours ago, and it's now (just about) ready. We're starting the moving process.
To the people to added records to their hosts file for the previous moves: You will need to remove those records.
Update: Waiting for DNS to propagate now. Should be up within a few hours at most. The new server is up and operational, but only a few are on it so far. If you are getting 404 errors or being redirected here, try loading up command prompt as administrator and using "ipconfig /flushdns". It will probably fix itself very soon; you may just have to wait. (You can also try changing your DNS servers, turning your router off and on, or rebooting your computer.) Users who are still having trouble can use http://fourchon.net/ temporarily while they wait for DNS to propagate.
We're no longer welcome at DreamHost, and currently looking around at other hosting solutions. 4chon.net is in the process of being transfered to another registrar.
Donations are now critical for 4chon, since we have lost at least $120 from the attack. You can now donate using this link.
I've put up a (much slower) temporary version of 4chon at http://temp.4chon.net. A few posts were lost during the downtime, but most of it was saved.
We're actively working to restore the main site.
Extreme DDoS took down the entire DreamHost network. Apparently, the attack was targetted at us. I'll explain more later.
4chon has been hit with an incredible DDoS attack that managed to take down the entire DreamHost (our host's) Network.
The DDoS was at least a couple gigabits in power, and was the cause of all this downtime today. We were attacked by an administrator from the new AnonOps ED (encyclopediadramatica.ch) over claims of me and others spamming it along with 4chon.org. I've never created an account on the new ED, nor have I ever encouraged spam. It appears to be a misunderstanding, for the most part.
What we shouldn't do and I strongly urge you to refrain from is to retaliate. It will only makes matters much worse.
We might soon get kicked off DreamHost because of the damage. Keep watching this page for updates.
To the person who was advocating drama on 4chon.org earlier today: WHY?!
Rebooting really quick to attempt to fix IPv6 connectivity issues.
Primary SQL server is down. It was timing out a moment ago, which caused the gateway timeouts. Support guy says he's looking at it...
Update: Should be okay now.
The main hosts for 4chon (www.4chon.net and images.4chon.net) are being moved to a new server (same host) later today, at 11:00 PM EST.
The move should only take a few minutes to complete the move, but many users will have to wait for DNS to propagate, which may take a while. To move over faster, you can add these three lines to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (or /etc/hosts if *NIX):
173.236.234.103 4chon.net 173.236.234.103 www.4chon.net 173.236.234.103 images.4chon.net
If you previously edited your hosts file for the last move, you will need to do the above. If not, you can wait it out if you really want.
We're not moving hosts; just servers. This new server is in Oklahoma and lightning fast. With the new server, we'll have all this:
Should have announced this earlier. Network maintenance down at the datacentre, scheduled for March 27, 2011 @ 10PM PDT. I'll fill this page with updates as they come. At the moment, I don't know much.
Update: Uhh… It's back already. What? Back down.
Heavy load on the SQL server (database). The majority of the site will still work, but posting can be slow.
Update: Back? Going down periodically. Stay tuned. It's back to speed.
We've moved hosts, but a lot of users will have to wait for DNS to propagate.
If you want to move over faster, add these three lines to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (or /etc/hosts if *NIX):
173.236.198.217 4chon.net 173.236.198.217 www.4chon.net 173.236.196.244 images.4chon.net
You may need to run notepad as an administrator to edit the hosts file.
Once you've done that, you can check if you're on the new host or not with http://4chon.net/new_host.txt.
Looks like another DDoS on the www. The server is up but with extremely high load:
load average: 21.62, 59.27, 141.91
I'm looking around for other hosting solutions; we might move if this downtime continues.
Update: Seems like it came back as soon as I added this entry.
The www server is acting very slowly. Possible DDoS attack.
Update: It's back and I've found the source of the problem. Unrelated to 4chon.
It appears we've achieved our first DDoS attack. I wasn't expecting one to come this soon, but it seems it has.
Update: It's back.
